Veiled Sand Ray

Arenafera occulta

Coastal65 cm wingspan · Settling · unseen

Field record

It settles over loose sand and works its wing edges under itself in small shivers until the sediment closes over its back and only a thin damp outline gives it away. I have driven the drone directly over one at a meter's altitude and seen nothing but ripple marks. It only breaks cover when something else disturbs the sand first, rising out of the seabed like the seabed changed its mind.

Marginal note:the sand exhales and there was a ray under it all along

Habitat

Depth range0600 m
DiscoveryNo special condition — found simply by piloting close enough to identify it.

Catching it

A Coastal-tier catch needs at least a Fine Mesh Net— anything under that rating can never hold it, whatever the throw. Bought at the Quartermaster’s counter for 90 crystals. A held net inks this entry for good and pays its ledger bonus on the spot.
